A Cottage at Lake Malawi
The Lake Malawi Cottage Story.
Building lake side cottages in the traditional authentic Malawian style to suite the requirements of discerning owners at the pristine shore of Lake Malawi in the Great Rift Valley of Africa is the mainstay of The Bamboric Project in Malawi. Each cottage is built to the requirements and specs of the customer. Each cottage is fully fitted with all the required furniture, linen, curtaining, carpeting, rugs, cutlery, crockery and of course, gas, water, solar energy and electrical supply. Once the cottage have been occupied by the proud owner, the only running cost is the purchase of gas and the odd payment for electricity.
Building the cottage happens after the new owner and Bamboric have agreed upon the cottage size, cottage content, locality of the plot, the size of the plot, and the price. Different localities are available, at the lake shore of Lake Malawi, at the foot hills of Mt. Mulanje, also in Malawi, in Mozambique, also at the shores of Lake Malawi on the Mozambican side, and lastly, in Tanzania, at the shores of Lake Malawi, on the Tanzanian side.
To have a view of the area, see the Google Maps photo below. You could also use Google Earth to fly there, type in Lake Malawi, and let Google Earth fly you there, right now, from your PC.
The typical authentic Malawian cottage for the discerning owner is approximately 300 square meters in size, including all verandas and garage. The cottage is constructed by local Malawian craftsmen like builders, carpenters, electricians, plumbers and labour. Home made clay fired bricks are used, as well as stone, rock, bamboo, thatch grass and hardwood.
All the furniture, windows, door frames and doors are crafted on site by local carpenters, using the tools they have been using for many years. No electrical or modern tools are used (none available, none owned by any carpenter or craftsmen) When construction start, no electricity is available from the national grid, and we prefer to built the cottage the real authentic Malawian style.
The sale of each cottage enable Bamboric to expand the local farming community, to supply piped water, to supply medicines, to supply education and educational goods like books, stationary and healthy prepared lunches at school. The spill-over of the revenue earned by the sale of each cottage goes towards the production of cooking gas and bio diesel. In turn, the compost gained from producing cooking gas and bio diesel is worked back into the little farms to enrich the soil and produce the next crop.

A typical sample of a lakeside cottage floorplan.
Below is a sample of what a authentic cottage floor plan could be like. You are free to design and submit your own plan, so long you understand that we will not move a single boulder, tree or any natural feature to accommodate the cottage. We construct the cottage around trees and natural rocky outcrops. The cottage is secondary, whilst the land and natural habitat enjoy first priority.
